Background of the Study

Digital storytelling is an innovative educational method that uses multimedia tools, such as video, audio, and graphics, to create narratives that engage learners in a meaningful way. In healthcare education, particularly nursing, digital storytelling can be a powerful tool to enhance students' understanding of patient care by incorporating real-life patient experiences and scenarios. Digital stories allow nursing students to connect emotionally with patients’ experiences, thereby fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of patient-centered care. This method also promotes critical thinking, as students must analyze and reflect on the stories presented (Park et al., 2023).

The Federal University of Technology, Akure, has incorporated digital storytelling in its nursing curriculum to enrich the learning experience. By using multimedia narratives that depict patient experiences, students can explore complex clinical situations, gain insights into diverse patient populations, and understand the human aspects of nursing care. Digital storytelling can offer students a unique opportunity to witness and reflect on patient journeys in ways that traditional textbooks and lectures cannot provide (Williams & Kamanzi, 2024). Additionally, storytelling helps improve communication skills, as students can learn to convey patient stories effectively while also honing their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Despite the growing interest in digital storytelling, there is limited research on its specific application within nursing education in Nigeria. This study aims to evaluate how digital storytelling influences nursing students' understanding of patient care, with a focus on how it enhances their ability to empathize, communicate, and apply clinical knowledge in real-world settings.

Statement of the Problem

While digital storytelling has proven effective in other fields of education, there is a need for research on its impact within nursing education in Nigeria. Nursing students at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, may benefit from enhanced patient care understanding through the integration of digital storytelling into their curriculum. However, the effectiveness of this teaching method in promoting empathy, clinical understanding, and communication skills remains unclear. This study aims to explore how digital storytelling influences nursing students’ understanding of patient care and whether it leads to more compassionate and effective nursing practice.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of digital storytelling on nursing students' understanding of patient care at Federal University of Technology, Akure.

2. To assess how digital storytelling influences nursing students' empathy and communication skills in patient care.

3. To explore nursing students' perceptions of digital storytelling as an educational tool for enhancing patient care understanding.

Research Questions

1. How does digital storytelling affect nursing students' understanding of patient care at Federal University of Technology, Akure?

2. In what ways does digital storytelling influence nursing students' empathy and communication skills in patient care?

3. What are nursing students’ perceptions of digital storytelling as a tool for enhancing their understanding of patient care?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nursing students who engage in digital storytelling demonstrate a greater understanding of patient care compared to those who do not.

2. Digital storytelling significantly improves nursing students' empathy and communication skills in patient care.

3. Nursing students have positive perceptions of digital storytelling as an educational tool for enhancing their understanding of patient care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nursing students enrolled at the Federal University of Technology, Akure. Limitations include the potential bias in self-reported perceptions of empathy and communication skills, and the inability to fully measure the long-term impact of digital storytelling on clinical performance.

Definitions of Terms
